Specialized Training: Combatives for armed citizens
Gun owners generally realize that they need training. Responsible gun owners know that this training does not and cannot all occur at the range.
When a person decides to carry a firearm, whether as a law enforcement officer, security guard, or armed citizen, they take on a tremendous responsibility that carries with it a huge liability.
Deciding to carry responsibly opens up three main avenues of concern that the armed citizen must be aware of.
First of these is the realization that any and all confrontations now become potentially lethal due to the fact that there will be a gun in the picture.
The second of these is being able to successfully deploy the firearm in the case of an ambush or surprise attack. A holstered weapon does its owner no good if it can’t be accessed if and when it’s needed most. There may be a time where the person has to fight off an initial, close quarter attack before the weapon can be safely accessed.
Third, is the concern of protecting the weapon if a confrontation does not require lethal force. Police officers know this situation well. However, it can and does happen to armed citizens also. Simply becoming involved in a confrontation doesn’t automatically justify drawing a holstered weapon.
However, if the situation escalates and becomes potentially physical, though still not a justified lethal force encounter, a gun may need to be protected so that the carrier can remain safe until the problem is resolved.
